State Minister for Science and Information and Communication Technology Yeafesh Osman yesterday said Bangla would be the language used in digitalisation process of Bangladesh.
"Much progress has already been achieved for building a digital Bangladesh as per the government's pledge," he said. He was speaking as the chief guest at an inaugural ceremony of the second international conference on “Computer Processing in Bangla Language”, jointly organised by Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) and Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) on IUB's Baridhara campus. Bangladesh University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam attended the function as the special guest. IUB acting Vice-Chancellor Prof M Omar Rahman, IUB Founder Trust Chairman Saifur Rahman, Additional Secretary and BCC Executive Director Mahfuzur Rahman and IUB School of Engineering and Computer Science Director Prof Mohammad Anowar addressed the function. Nine researchers from India, Korea, Japan, the US and host Bangladesh took part in the conference. Bangla has already been installed in a prestigious position in the world. An appeal has been made to the United Nations to include Bangla as one of its official languages, added the state minister.
He said the government ensured right to information of the common people, who are now aware of technology. Employment opportunities were also created through the optimum use of technology, he said. Yeafesh said the government has a plan to open Arabic call centres which, when implemented, will create job opportunities for madrasa students.
India's Shibpur Bengal Engineering and Science University Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajoy Kumar Roy and Prof Bidyut Baron Chowdhury of Indian Statistical Institute presented the keynote paper.
