2 Bangladeshis killed in Bahrain

At least two Bangladeshis have been killed in Bahrain when agitating anti-government protesters travelling on a truck ran over them.

The ill-fated Bangladeshis met the tragic end of their lives while returning to their camp at Sitara, some 20 kilometres off Manama, according to a report received here on Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Abdul Hannan, son of Abdul Gafur, Passport No: X 0063211, and Md Aklas, son of Tozommul Ali, Passport No: R0578597. Both the victims hailed from Sylhet, reported Bangladesh Embassy in Bahrain.


Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Mijarul Quayes, now staying in Tunisia, said the early repatriation of the Bangladeshi workers, who fled troubled-torn Libya, from Tunisia is a priority of the government. He said at the current pace, the repatriation process could end in 4-5 days.

He discussed with the Tunisian officials developments in Libya along with regional issues and a roadmap for bilateral cooperation.

On 14 March, a total of 2,700 Bangladeshis were flown out of Tunisia in nine flights leaving a remaining 7,200 awaiting repatriation from the country.

The foreign secretary, who reached Tunisia on 13 March and returns home tomorrow, visited Bangladeshis in the Libya-Tunisia border and saw off three batches of Bangladeshis returning by three flights from Djerba in Tunisia, said a foreign ministry release on Wednesday.
On his arrival at the camp site, he was briefed by the Camp Commander and heads of international humanitarian agencies working in the camp.

Mijarul Quayes was told that there was adequate stock of food and water in the transit camp and that there were also healthcare facilities. He thanked the concerned for their support and assistance.

He also suggested increasing the number of distribution points so that everybody gets food.
Tunisian Army and police personnel are looking after the overall security in the transit camp and airport.

The government has dispatched officers from the Bangladesh Missions in the region to the Libya-Tunisia and Libya-Egypt borders to issue travel documents to the Bangladeshi workers and assist their repatriation process.

He talked with a group of Bangladeshis in the camp and listened to their grievances and the dire situation the crisis has put them in.

The workers expressed their happiness at his visit seeking special consideration of the government to help them overcome the setback.

In the afternoon, the foreign secretary met Tunisian Secretary of State Radhouane Nouicer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, he conveyed sincere thanks and appreciation to Nouicer for the support and assistance extended by the Tunisian people and government to the Bangladeshis entering Tunisia from Libya.
