Government has a plan to provide modern facility to Teletalk users by introducing 3G Technology and extending the existing 2G networks by 2012
In this regard, the government aims to initiate a “3G Technology Introduce and 2G Network Extension Project” at a cost of TK 20 billion, comprising TK 14.77 billion foreign aid and TK 4.32 billion Teletalk fund, said a planning commission source.
During the Bangladesh-China 12th Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting held in Beijing, the China government decided to extend its hand for Bangladesh telecom sector. Later, China Exim Bank assured the government for providing fund after conducting feasibility study.
The main objectives of the project is make the telecom sector profitable and competitive by raising facility for 55 lakh GSM users, providing high speed data transmission, install network in remote area in upazila level as well as strengthening Teletalk.
After completion the project, Teletalk would provide 3G services to 15 lakh user and better quality services to 55 lakh GSM users. By installing the 3G technology, the mobile user would enjoy the Real Time Video Calling, Live Mobile TV, High Speed Download, HD gaming, e-education, public health, tele-medicine and e-shopping.
Meanwhile, BTRC yet to formulate the guide line for providing 3G license to the mobile operators. Bangladesh has 65.14 million mobile phone users currently, the source said.Presently Teletalk provides e-result, e-admission, e-health and public awareness for its users. Teletalk started its operation in 2004 and presently it has a total 12 lakh users. The number of Teletalk subscribers would reach to 28 lakh after the completion of “Second Network Extension Project” that would end by December this year, the source said. At present five mobile operators are using GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) technology and Citycell is using CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology to conduct their operations in the country. With the opening of mobile phone services in Chittagong Hill Tracts area, mobile phone coverage has reached 90 percent area in terms of geographical area. But, 3G licenses were yet to be handed over to cellphone operators, depriving mobile phone internet users of the most modern technological facility.
