BCS Digital Expo 2011 draws smaller crowds

The five-day ‘BCS Digital Expo 2011’ ended yesterday, drawing lower visitors than expected due to the ICC Cricket World Cup.

“Digital Bangladesh for the New Generation” was the theme of the third edition of the expo.
However, the formal closing ceremony of the fair will be held today with Finance Minister AMA Muhith as chief guest.

Establishment and Administrative Adviser to the Prime Minister HT Imam and State Minister for Science and ICT Architect Yeafesh Osman are also scheduled to attend the function.

Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) organised the fair at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), in association with Ministry of Science and ICT, and Business Promotion Council of Ministry of commerce.

“Visitors in the exposition were fewer than usual. This might be for the ongoing World Cup Cricket,” BCS president Mostafa Jabbar said.

He however expressed his satisfaction on the overall progress of the fair.
“The aim of such IT fairs is only to promote IT products; not to sale those like other trade fairs. There are marketplaces for selling IT products. In that sense, it was a successful fair,” he told the Daily Sun.

“We wanted to give a festive look to the fair as Bangladeshi people are crazy about fairs,” Jabbar said.

Watching Cricket matches however was not disturbed as giant screens of the festival pulled in a huge crowd who did not want to miss valuable moments of the World Cup, in which, Bangladesh is a host country.

Free internet browsing, online video steaming, online radio, IP television, internet gaming, virtual project competition, quiz contests and seminar roundtables were also arranged on the sidelines of the fair.

Ananda Computers, owned by Mostafa Jabbar, showcased its newly introduced ‘Bijoy’ branded notebook computers at the fair. They also promoted new Bijoy softwares for uninterrupted Bangla typing, digitally formatted books of five classical writers and so on.

Qubee, the platinum sponsor of the fair, offered their 4G Wimax modems at a reduced price of Tk 1000. They have also extended the validity of their pre-paid cards to one month from 15 days, for one GB internet use.

Rahimafrooz, the local leader in IPS and UPS manufacturing, offered three percent price discount on IPS and offered gift items on every purchase of UPS.

Huawei Enterprise, the Chinese telecom and IT equipment giant, presented which direction the ‘Digital Bangladesh’ is heading towards.

They also offered solutions for video conferencing, data communication, IP contact centre, data centre, unified communications and e-governance.

A total of 66 local and foreign companies showcased their products and services at 29 pavilions and 73 stalls of the BICC.
