In conversation with Sandipan

“You can say music is my passion and devotion. It is my meditation. I want to do music till my last heartbeat.” says Sandipan.

A promising singer, Sandipan first came to limelight in 2004 when his song Sonabondhu was aired at the popular TV show Ittadi. The song received a huge response from the audience and that is how it all began.

Since 2004, Sandipan has been leaving his footprint in a number of genres of music including fusion, Lalon song, folk and Bangla song.

“I consider my first album Sonabondhu (2004) as a major breakthrough in my career. The instant success of the album encouraged many to work with me and the result is five albums which have been released since 2004,” says Sandipan.

“The albums are Sonabondhu, Sonar Medal, A Tribute to SD Burman and RD Burman, Aay Praan-er Utshob-e and Chan Mukhey Modhur Hashi,” Sandipan informed.

Recalling his earlier days, Sandipan says, “I was born and raised in a music-oriented family. I received my first Sa Re Ga Ma Pa lessons from my elder sister who was a classical singer.”

“In Chittagong, I received lessons in classical music from Mihir Kanti Laal. But, when I went to Kolkata for my higher education in acting, I had the opportunity to learn Tagore songs under Dwijen Mukhopaddhay. On my return from Kolkata in 2000, I joined the theatre movement as an actor in the theatre troupe Nagorik Natya Somproday,” he added.

“One day, incidentally, I ran on to Bappa Mjumdar. I started working with him. One day, Hanif Shonket arrived at Bappa Majumdar’s studio. Bappa Majumdar played to him my recorded song Sonabondhu and after that the rest automatically followed,” hecontinued.

While sharing his views on music, Sandipan stated, “I never want to be stuck with a certain form of singing. I like versatility. From singing Tagore songs to doing playback music in the movies, I want to do everything.”

When asked about his inspiration in music, Sandiapn says, “Apart from my family, my inspiration for singing is Kishore Kumar and Shyamal Mitra. But, when it comes to the local music scene Bappa Mojumdar has always been there for me.”

Speaking about his current projects, Sandipan says, “I am looking forward to releasing my sixth album on the coming Pahela Baishakh (14 April). The composition and music arrangement for the album has been done by Hridoy Khan. The album will include 8 to 10 songs, written by Gunjon Chowdhury, Chan Mia Baul, me and others. I have already finished the recording of six songs.”

“I have also been featured as a judge in a reality TV show which aims at ferreting out the singing talents in the variegated singers of different genres. Fatema-tuz-Zohra is a co-judge at the programme which is going on Boishakhi TV,” informed Sandipan.

Sandipan has formed a band recently. The newly formed band Sovvosachi was launched on 11 February with a live show at Ekushey Television’s Phone O Live Studio Concert.

Speaking about his band, Sandipan says, “We want to establish a style of our own. The members of my band are very talented and I am hopeful that we will do good.”

“I think we will be able to bring out Sovvosachi’s debut album within a year”, ended Sandipan.
