The chamber judge of Appellate Division of the apex court on Wednesday sent to its full bench Prof Muhammad Yunus’ petition for staying Tuesday’s High Court verdict and BB letter removing him from the post of managing director (MD) of the Grameen Bank.
The full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque will hear the appeal on March 15.
Earlier on the day, Muhammad Yunus and nine directors of the Grameen Bank filed two provisional leave-to-appeal petitions seeking stay on the HC verdict and the central bank letter.
Chamber Judge Syed Mahmud Hossain started hearing the appeals at about 2:30pm.
After hearing arguments from Rokanuddin Mahmud, counsel for the Nobel laureate, and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, the chamber judge passed the order.
Earlier in the morning, Dr Kamal Hossain’s chamber, on behalf of Yunus and the nine directors, filed the petitions.
The High Court on Tuesday upheld Bangladesh Bank's "removal" of Yunus from Grameen Bank summarily rejecting two writ petitions filed challenging the legality of the central bank's order.
Yunus was unceremoniously relieved of his duties on Wednesday through a Bangladesh Bank letter sent to Grameen Bank Chairman Khondoker Muzammel Huq.
The central bank said Yunus failed to seek its approval when he was reappointed as the managing director in 2000, violating one of the statutes of the partly state-owned Grameen Bank.
Prof Yunus on the next day filed a writ petition challenging the central bank order while the nine members of the board of director filed another petition.
