The government has undertaken a project for developing a road to boost export and import of commodities between India and Bangladesh through Burimari land port. Under the Tk 5.59 billion project, the Lalmonirhat-Burimari land port road will be upgraded to a national highway.
Of the total cost, the government will provide Tk 310 million from the national exchequer while Tk 5.28 billion will come from Indian US$ 1 credit line.
Directorate of roads and railway will implement the project by 2013. The executive committee of national economic council (ECNEC) has approved the project on March 8 with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in chair.
The main objectives of the project are to establish direct and effective road communication with the land port and Lalmonirhat district as well as rest of the country. It also aims to develop the socio-economic condition of the people at the project area.
The Lalmonirhat-Burimari road (N-509) is more important as it has connected the land port with the capital Dhaka as well as the rest of the country. Earlier, LGED had constructed the road primarily and was widened by roads and highways division. But, it was not upgraded to highway.
Meanwhile, medium and small holes were developed in the road. The road requires renovations as it got eleven level crossings and huge number of extreme turns.
Under the project, 7.3 metre long pavement, 1.5 metre long hard solders in both sides and divider will be reconstructed.
Besides, 3 metre long lane for slow driven vehicles in both sides and footpath along with drain in the bazaar area will be constructed. Truck stands will also be constructed for parking more numbers of trucks in the port yard.
After completion of the project, the export-import through Burimari land port will be increased extensively.
