wo former NSI bosses remanded

A Dhaka court on Monday placed two former chiefs of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) on a four-day remand each in the deadly grenade attack on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka on August 21, 2004. Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud passed the order upon a petition of the investigation officer of the case, Abdul Kahar Akand also Special Superintendent of criminal investigation department (CID), seeking a seven-day remand for Major General (retd) Rezzaqul Haider Chowdhury and Brigadier General (retd) M Abdur Rahim.

The two former chiefs of the intelligence agency, who were detained in connection with the country’s biggest arms haul case in Chittagong of 2004, were shown arrested in the August 21 grenade attack case on April 13 and brought to Dhaka Central Jail on Sunday from Chittagong Central Jail.

They were produced before the court on Monday amid tight security. The prosecution told the court that they had collected evidence against the former NSI chiefs about their involvement in the grenade attack case and their names were revealed by detained militant leader Mufti Abdul Hannan in his confessional statement to the court.

The two should be placed on a seven-day remand for the proper investigation into the case. Opposing the remand, the defence lawyers said their clients were innocent and told that the two were implicated in the case only for political purposes. The lawyers also submitted petitions for their bail.
