Bangladesh goes to Venice Biennale 2011

Bangladesh will be taking part at the ‘Venice Biennale 2011’, to be held in Italy from June 4 this year. This is the first time that Bangladesh is participating at the prestigious event.


Works of five young Bangladeshi artists: Mahbub Rahman, Kabir Ahmed, Imran Hossain, Prothomodas and Taiyeba Begum, have been selected by the organisers to be displayed at the Biennale alongside the artworks by talented artists from across the globe.To be able to participate in such an event is surely a matter of pride for the Bangladeshi art scene.

Marking the participation of Bangladesh at ‘Venice Biennale 2011’, a three day (24- 26 February) painting exhibition titled ‘The Venetian Window of Bangladesh’, was held at the residence of the ambassador of Italy, Giorgio Guglielmino. Jointly organised by Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts and Embassy of Italy, the exhibition featured paintings of some of the leading names in the Bangladeshi art scene. Art works by Qayyum Chowdhury, Syed Jahangir, Mustafa Monwar, Hashem Khan, Rafiqun Nabi, Monirul Islam, Kalidas Karmakar, Mahmudul Haque, Shahid Kabir, Shahabuddin, Farida Zaman and Rokeya Sultana were displayed at the event. A total of eighty artists took part there. Foreign Secretary Mijarul Quayes was the inaugurator and chief guest at the inaugural programme. Among others the Italian ambassador Giorgio Guglielmino and Abul Khair, chairman of Bengal Foundation were also present at the occasion. The exhibition was a well attended event. Apart from seeing the paintings visitors were also able to buy any artwork of their choice.
