Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS) is a popular organisation among the students of DU for arranging different kinds of film festivals regularly.
With the motto of ‘Better Film, Better Viewers’, every year DUFS has been very active by arranging film festivals, workshops and seminars regularly.
‘DUFS creates an opportunity for the students to practice extra curricular activities which makes our life more happening and colourful,’ said Shampa, a member of DUFS.
Every year around 50 students from the first year of different departments of Dhaka University become members of DUFS. ‘We get hundreds of students who are interested to be members of DUFS, but we can’t allow more than 50 members for our limitations in terms of fund and accommodation,’ said the current president of DUFS Ripon Kumar Dash Dhrubo.
Established in 1962, the film society had a significant contribution to the film society movement in Bangladesh. ‘But unfortunately the present film societies in Bangladesh are not united,’ regretted Dhrubo.
DUFS regularly organises film screening for its members. Pranab, a current member of DUFS, said, ‘I get the opportunity to watch celebrated and rare movies from across the world. DUFS gives us the platform for a better understanding of movies.’
With the slogan of ‘Take Your Camera, Frame Your Dream’ DUFS has been orgaising International Inter University Short Film Festival (IIUSFF) for five years. ‘A jury board consisting of three members, one from DUFS and two guest film specialists, scrutinises films for screening in the festival from the submitted ones and also selects the winners,’ Dhrubo added.
While talking about the shortcoming of the organization, Dhrubo said, ‘We want more enthusiasm from the members. It is unfortunate that DUFS could not bring out enough members who are dedicated and hard working to promote film as a tool of social change.’
