A parliamentary watchdog body dug out evidences of some Tk 100 crore allegedly minted by Fire Brigade chief Brigadier-General Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Ministry affairs figured out that the Fire Brigade Director-General made around Tk 50 to 100 crore by corrupt means through the process of buying machinery and materials.
The lawmakers on the committee suggested the Home Ministry to cancel the appointment of the suspected venal to official of the emergency service, whom the government gave additional two-year contractual appointment after the expiry of the term of his job.
Chairman of the parliamentary committee Major-General (retd) Abdus Salam Thursday informed journalists about the alleged wrongdoing by the brigadier after a meeting of the committee held at the Parliament Bhavan.
He said a committee was formed with Whip of the National Parliament Mirza Azam MP as its chief to investigate alleged corruption in the fire service.
“But the committee made delay in submitting report for many reasons,” said general Salam, adding: “We just received the report today.”
Mirza Azam told the journalists, “The corruption took place during the purchase of a few hundred pieces of machinery and material.”
The standing committee issued a notification in May 2010 for the investigation into allegations of irregularities in the fire brigade. Later, the probe body led by Mirza Azam was formed.
The probe report will be handed over to the Speaker. The parliament speaker will forward it to the Home Ministry for action.
