Razzaq - I’m still active

At the age of 70, Nayak Raj Razzaq (king of heroes) is satisfied with his successful life and wants to continue his career as an actor and director. But, he feels pain at the turmoil that the film industry is going through.
On occasion of his 70th birth anniversary today, New Age talked with the king of Bangladeshi filmdom widely known as Dhaliwood on various issues.
‘I’m still active and wish to continue my career till the last breath. I’m thankful to Allah, to the industry and to the masses for giving me honour,’ Abdur Razzaq told New Age.
‘But, I feel pain at the continuous fall of the industry. Nobody really cares for the industry. Government should immediately take some effective measures to control the fall,’ he said.
From his vast experience of over four decades in the industry, Razzaq observes that shortage of quality cinemas and lack of talent in the industry are two major causes for the fall of the industry.
‘Cinemas need to be improved a lot. Who wants to go to such poor cinemas to watch movies? Government should take steps for the improvement of the cinemas and also force the entrepreneurs to keep cineplexes in the shopping malls,’ he said.
‘Shortage of talented directors and actors is another major problem in the industry. Now I don’t see any talented director who could create talented artistes like me. Just because of the shortage of talented directors, the producers don’t get the turn over,’ he added.
A vocal against the import of the Indian movies in Bangladesh, Razzaq, however, believes that the three Indian movies those have been imported so far will not have any impact on the industry. ‘Such poor quality Kolkata movies cannot be considered as threat.’
‘But, if they [exhibitors] try to import more movies, I’ll try to generate the best possible resistance along with the people who love our industry,’ said Razzaq.
Born on January 23, 1942 in Kolkata, Razzaq had fascination for art and culture from his boyhood. While studying at a college in Kolkata, he for the first time appeared in the movie titled Ratan Lal Bangali. With the aim to be a film star, Razzaq went to learn film study in Filmalaya in Mumbai, India in 1959. Returning from Mumbai, he also performed in two other movies in Kolkata titled Pankotilak and Shilalipi. He could manage to develop his access to the Kolkata based movie industry.
However, the Hindu-Muslim riot broke out in 1964 forced Razzak and his family to migrate to Dhaka. Though Razzaq had the aim to rule the then East Pakistani movie industry, after the migration, he however, initially started acting in TV plays. He became a favourite of the viewers of Pakistan television acting in the series Ghoroa. But, he did not forget about his dream of becoming a ‘film star.’
Razzaq has acted in over 300 movies including Jibon Theke Neya, Maynamati, Obujh Mon, Beimaan, Neel Akasher Niche, Oshikkhito, Chhutir Ghonta and Baadi Theke Begum. Razzaq, however, played his last role as a hero in 1994 in the movie Ondho Biswas. Then, after a five year hiatus, he returned to the silver screen for a role in Baba Kano Chakor. These days he appears only for the roles suitable to his age and position.
Razzak is a UNFPA goodwill ambassador.

Purnima in hibernation

Even few days back our very own leading romantic actress of Bengali cinema, Purnima, was very active in movies. She was very busy with her shooting schedule and was always going out but now she is nowhere to be found. Is she out of town or is she sick? Or is she on hibernation? No she is very much in town and healthy. Sources said, “It seems like she has sent herself to exile, spending her day out of public eye and even keeping her cellphone switched off.

The entertainment industry is constantly trying to get hold of the very beautiful and vibrant Purnima. But the continuous effort to reach her is all meeting a failed result. Neither she goes out of her house nor does she switch on her cellphone. Looks like she is on complete hibernation and having her very own time.
A local newspaper was the last one to talk to her about the total detachment with the outside world. When the newspaper asked her why she is not doing any movie or signing any of them, Purnima stated no specific reason. When she was asked about the reason behind her not going out, she just said that she does not feel like going out. She gives similar replies on the topic to people who visit her. The last thing she said is that she liked being at home, to spend some time alone watching movies and doing household worked.
All can be said that the Bangladeshi Film industry is desperately missing her and so we all her very own loving fans!

Local film personalities evaluate the festival

An international film festival is always significant in terms of exchange of views among filmmakers and enthusiasts from different nations. As the 12th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) is on, and a significant number of foreign delegates are here in Dhaka, some local filmmakers and activists share their views on the festival.

“It's a major event. The total success of the festival relies on small successes of different sections. A significant number of delegates are here in Dhaka, and local participation is good. To me, this year the festival seems more organised compared to the previous arrangements,” said Sabbir Ahmed Chowdhury, president of Zahir Raihan Film Society.

“Filmmakers such as Dariush Mehrjui and Tahmineh Milani are here. Probably this is the only film fest in Bangladesh that has managed to draw international attention.

“At any major event, there will be some mismanagement. This festival is no exception. But I do think and hope that the organisers would be able to overcome such minor issues in future,” he added.
Filmmaker Nurul Alam Atique gives priority to the local cine-culture rather than few big festivals. He said, “Festivals are important to filmmakers and enthusiasts but we need a better atmosphere in the film industry and at theatres. We should focus on regular screening of films rather than taking part in festivals,” said Atique.
Noted actress Joya Ahsan, whose three films (“Guerrilla”, “Doobshatar” and “Phire Esho Behula”) are taking part in the festival, feels that major festivals like this provide a great opportunity to exchange views with actors, directors from other countries. She said, “I hope people would get inspired and go to theatres on a regular basis. Cultural exchange is a major aspect of a festival such as this.”

Young documentary-maker and organiser Anwar Chowdhury sees the festival as an encouragement, but is concerned about the quality of the films in general. Chowdhury, general secretary of Bangladesh Documentary Council, said that the number of participating films and countries is inspiring but the organisers should keep an eye on the quality of the films as well.

“This is [perhaps] the biggest film festival in our country in terms of local and international participation. I was at the inaugural ceremony and watched the opening film. That particular film is great but I'm not sure about how good all the films are,” said Chowdhury.
Today, Tahmineh Milani's “Principles”, which is competing for the top award, will be screened at Central Public Library. “Nijhum Aronnye” (Bangladesh Panorama) and “Mum's Guest” (Dariush Mehrjui Retrospective) are other notable films of the day.

Jago Hua Savera Screened In Kolkata

It was a blast from the past that saw cinema lovers in Kolkata keeping its date with history -- that of watching the Indian premiere of the 1959 Pakistani movie “Jago Hua Savera” (Day Shall Dawn) which has dialogues and songs by legendary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
Based on “Padma Nadir Majhi” (The Boatman of River Padma), a story by Bengali novelist Manik Bandopadhyay, “Jago Hua Savera”, directed by A.J. Kardar, is considered the first Pakistani film that had won international acclaim. It had won eleven international awards, including one at the Moscow Film Festival.
The film, whose young cast was drawn from India and the then East and West Pakistan, was screened at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations auditorium in Kolkata on January 12 as part of a tribute to Faiz Ahmed Faiz on his birth centenary celebrations.
The male lead was played by Khan Ataur Rahman (under the alias “Anis”) from then East Pakistan, and the female lead was played by actress Tripti Mitra (from Kolkata).
At a time when film production in the then East Pakistan was unthinkable, it was shot within 48 days at a tiny fishing village on the banks of river Meghna, not far from Dhaka.
Faiz's daughter Salima Hashmi, who was present on the occasion, said this was the first screening of the film in India.
“Personally, it's a very emotional moment because of the connections between Lahore and Kolkata and between Faiz, films and Kolkata. He (Faiz) spoke with great admiration for Satyajit Ray,” she said.
The first realistic and experimental film of Pakistan, “Jago Hua Savera” strikes poetic chords complemented by scenes showcasing the plight and misery of the lives of the fishermen of those times.
For Pakistan's most famous poet and leftist intellectual Faiz, it was his first brush with the medium of cinema as he contributed to dialogues and lyrics.

Bangladeshi Films Under The Limelight

While two local films -- “Guerrilla” and “Moner Manush” -- compete for the top honour, 35 more are being screening in different sections at the 12th Dhaka International Film Festival, starting on January 12. 'Tribute to Tareque Masud' and 'Bangladesh Panorama' sections naturally feature all Bangladeshi films, while local productions are also being screened in sections like 'Short and Independent', 'Spiritual' and a special segment on Rabindranath Tagore.
'Bangladesh Panorama' features eight contemporary local films, most of which are made by young filmmakers. Nurul Alam Atique's “Doobshatar”, Murad Parvez's “Chandragrahan”, Bodrul Anam Saud's “Khondo Galpo 1971”, Hasibur Reza Kallol's “Andho Nirangam” and Maruf Hossain's “…Ebong Kanna” are on the list.
“Festivals are an important platform for filmmakers and film-related people to exchange views. But what we need the most is a better atmosphere in the industry and at theatres. We should focus on regular screening of films rather than taking part in a festival,” says Atique.
“We need to focus on developments in producing and making films,” he adds.
Atique's “Doobshatar” earned plaudits last year, while Hossain's “…Ebong Kanna”, an adaptation of an Aktaruzzaman Ilias story, will be premiered at the festival before going public soon. Kallol's “Andho Nirangam” is a work on Fakir Lalon Shai's philosophy.
The 'Short and Independent' segment, that features 66 films from across the globe, includes 17 local films. “Mrittu Pare Bari”, a documentary by Razibul Hossain and a group of students from ULAB, will get its premiere at the festival. The list also includes “16 December” (by Mushfek Manzoor), “Ekatturer Padojatri” (Farid Ahmed), “A Little Nostalgia” (Shahid Azam) and “Aarshi” (Aminur Islam).
A chronological progress of Bangladeshi cinema can be observed through watching these films as most of these are made by young and aspiring filmmakers.
The 'Spiritual' section features only one film -- Shahiduzzman Badal's “Charak Puja”. 'Tribute to Rabindranath' features four films -- “Shasti” (Kazi Hayat), “Shubha” and “Kabuliwala (both by Chashi Nazrul Islam) and “Abujh Bou” (Nargis Akhter).
The 'Tribute' section features five Tareq Masud films -- “Runway”, “Antarjatra”, “Matir Moina”, “Muktir Gaan” and “Naroshundar”.
On January 12, the festival was formally inaugurated through a programme held at the Main Auditorium, National Museum. Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith inaugurated the 10-day event. Iranian filmmakers Dariush Mehrjui and Tahmineh Milani, along with festival director and chairman -- Ahmed Muztaba Zamal and Syed Marghub Murshed respectively -- were present at the session.
They all hoped for a better cine culture in Bangladesh. The foreign delegates expressed their gratitude to be part of the festival.
Today (third day of the festival), films will be screened at all four venues -- Shawkat Osman Auditorium, Central Public Library; Main and Sufia Kamal Auditorium, National Museum; and Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, Dhanmondi.

Shakira perform in Bangladeshi film

Colombian singing sensation Shakira will croon and also possibly act in a feature film whose cast will comprise some leading names of Indian and Bangladeshi cinema, the film's director Enamul Karim Nirjhar of Bangladesh said yesterday.
Shakira will lend her voice to five songs and the music will be composed by India's Debajyoti Mishra for the proposed film. Titled 'Desire The Flying Butter', the film will be co-produced by a "friend of mine", Nirjhar told reporters from Dhaka. Nirjhar chose to keep the cast of the film under a wrap but said, "It will have some known and little-known actors from India and Bangladesh".
Replying to a question, he said efforts were also on to rope in Shakira to act in the film that will be shot in India, Bangladesh, Scotland and some other countries. The director, an architect by qualification and profession, also declined to share the storyline of the film saying "we will disclose everything gradually".
"We are keeping mum right now on the cast and story of the film for strategic reasons but we will let you know everything in course of time", said Nirjhar. Asked about the subject of the movie, he said, "It is going to be unlike ten other films. It will be a different kind of film.
"All that I can say now is that we want to prove our existence, our desire and friendship of the sub-continent so that we in this region stand with our heads held high." Nirjhar's alliance with Debajyoti Mishra goes back to 2007 when the composer did the soundtrack of the director's debut film 'Aha' which is about a century-old house and the characters surrounding it. The film, with a cast comprising some of the leading names of Bangladesh theatre and parallel cinema like Humayun Faridi, Tariq Anam Khan and Khaled Khan, won national awards in Bangladesh for best direction, editing, female singer and cinematography. 'Aha', screened at several international festivals like Munich, Cairo and Dubai, was also Bangladesh's nomination for the Oscars.
However, Nirjhar's second feature film 'Nomuna' (Example, 2009), whose music was composed by Mishra, is yet to get the clearance of Bangladesh censor board.

Not a boom year for Bangla film industry 2011

The year of 2011 was not a boom year for the country’s Bangla film industry. The year saw the release of only 46 films in total, which is the less possible number of movies released in the last 20 years. In 2010, 57 films were released.

File Photo
Of the released films, only 11 came out business successful. And it does not end here. Not all the released films can be termed quality productions.
This crises in the local film industries had forced the cinema halls to look at the Indian film industry for better business.
This had created tension between local producers and cinema hall owners. However, when Jor, an Indian Bangla film, was released in Bangladesh last year, the turnout in the cinema halls was not as high as previously anticipated.
So, it can be said that import of Indian Bangla films is not the solution to the declining number of cine-goers.
The tragic and sudden death of filmmaker Tareque Masud in a road accident was another major blow to the country’s film industry last year.
Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) received a grant of Tk 58 crore last year, but for which purpose the money would be spent still remains undecided.
Apart from the aforesaid issues, the conflict between people associated with the film industry- such as film producers and film artistes- was a matter of concern. As a result, a few quality films were produced last year.
Despite so many crises, films like Guerrilla and Meherjaan offered a beacon of hope for the country’s film industry. Guerrilla won the Best Asian Film Award at the 17th Kolkata Film Festival (KFF) and Meherjaan earned recognition in film festivals abroad.
We confidently expect that the New Year will be the boom year for the country’s film industry as the cine-goers are eagerly awaiting the new release.
